Here's a way to meet new friends, improve your cooking
skills, and enjoy tasty meals in the comfort of your own home. It's called Greater
Washington Gourmet Couples, "an eating and drinking social club for
married and single couples in the Washington area."
The club's calendar is based around "dinner party sets" where a
large number of couples get together at a Planning Party to organize smaller
dinner groups. The groups, typically four or five couples each, plan menus
for dinner parties to be held at one anothers'
homes. The dinner parties are rotated so that a couple will probably host a
Planning Party or dinner party only once a year. Costs of the dinner parties,
as well as preparation and clean up, are divided equally among participating
couples.
Along with dinner parties, the club sponsors larger theme events and visits
to popular area restaurants. Some of our theme activities include Strawberry
and Champagne Brunch, Spanish Tapas Party with live music, Mardi Gras Party,
New World Wine Tasting, Halloween Party, St. Patrick's Day Party, and a Crab
Feast. Our most special event is the 12th Night Party during the first week
of January. Restaurant visits have been to Fogo de Chao, O Street Mansion, Kinkeads Restaurant in Washington
DC, Stone Manor Inn near Frederick, Maryland, and Sunday brunch at Patowmack Farms in Virginia.
Club dues are $20 a year per couple, and members will receive a monthly
newsletter which includes menus, recipes and upcoming events. Interested
couples are encouraged to attend one event to help them decide if they would
like to join.
